Mini Excavator Quick Couplers

When changing buckets or attachments on your mini excavator, it can be time consuming and inconvenient to have to step out of the cab to unlock the coupler and then remove the safety pin before connecting and disconnecting.mini excavator quick coupler A quick coupler can help eliminate this problem and save you valuable time on each job. There are a number of different types of quick hitches available, with hydraulic, mechanical and rotating tilting couplers all popular choices for use on mini diggers and backhoe loaders. This article focuses on the hydraulic type of coupler, which can be found installed at the end of most excavator attachments to facilitate the rapid exchange of working equipment.

There are a few things to consider when selecting the right hydraulic quick coupler for your machine, starting with checking whether your excavator can support a hydraulic coupler.mini excavator quick coupler Hydraulic quick couplers require a dedicated hydraulic circuit to open and close them from the cab, so it's important to ensure your excavator can handle this before purchasing.

If your machine can support a hydraulic quick coupler then it's worth considering the Rhinox HQX range of couplers, which are all LOLER rated between 800kg and 5,000kg (depending on the size of the quick coupler). Unlike some other hydraulic quick hitches, which can sometimes be prone to sticking when under pressure, the HQX has a twin locking system with a rear latch that locks into the coupler and a front hook with a deadlock cylinder designed to lock the attachment pin into the curved front hook to prevent unsafe ejection during operation.

The HQX also has a unique integrated side handle that allows the operator to easily open and release the pin from the front safety hook without having to step out of the cab. This is especially useful when the bucket or attachment is stuck or requires some extra effort to loosen.

If your budget doesn't stretch to a hydraulic quick coupler then the next best option is a manual mechanical coupler. These are fully manual and work by the operator pressing down on a lever bar within the latch to close and open it. This type of coupler is commonly used on smaller excavators and backhoe loaders and generally works by clamping around the attachment pin to hold it in place once engaged. These couplers have a few drawbacks, however. The main one is that they can take up to three times as long to connect and disconnect compared to a hydraulic coupler, and the latch can be susceptible to damage from dirt or mud being caught in the mechanism. For this reason, a mechanical coupler isn't ideal for use on jobs that involve a lot of dirty or sandy conditions.
